Strange

I have always disliked children. Even when I was a kid, I disliked children. It used to be that if a person was under 35 or so (which is odd, considering I am), I found them difficult to tolerate. (Two notable exceptions: my sister Kristi, and my cousin Ben.) Lately I’ve noticed that kids–even babies–don’t bother me as much as they used to. But I’ve been hanging around with all my cousins’ babies and toddlers–and I haven’t once wanted to punt one through a window. And I’ve been chatting–mainly via blog comments, but sometimes on IM–with some of Carson’s students, and I like these people, too. Am I getting old? Are the mood stabilizers actually making me less of a grouch? And if they are, then what? Grouchiness is my identity. I’m not smart; I’m not talented; but I’m sure as hell grumpy.

Maybe I just need to go to a nice restaurant. There’s always an obnoxious kid screaming in a nice restaurant.

    Yes, you are getting old.

Kidding. For me, kids are sort of on a sliding scale. I define anyone younger than me as a kid, and I also define many high school students my age and older as “kids.” It just depends on ow they act. For example – the freshmen in my Geometry class – kids. They are so freaking loud…all the time. Whether we are taking tests, checking homework, or doing a lesson, they NEVER shut up.

I also consider my peers who make comments such as “Muslims cause a lot of problems” and “Democrats can’t be Christians” kids.

And, of course, I consider babies and toddlers “kids.” But, at least they just sit there and look cute and/or scream instead of being ignorant.

That didn’t make much sense, but, you get my idea.

I know I’m getting old. I don’t need you reminding me, whippersnapper! ::razz:

I’m really not sure what it is. But I’m old enough to be your mom, and you’ve never once made me want to reach through the screen and slap you. I still generally dislike people who act like children, and I’m not really softened if they happen to *be* children. I definitely don’t want any of my own.

Maybe I’ll have to find an identity beyond Amy the Grouch.

I’ve always found it odd that you liked Ben. I like children in general and almost always find him to be remarkably annoying. Not nearly so much now, but during the whole “making us sit in the classroom during dinner and learn whatever crap he was teaching” phase I found him particularly exhausting.
